Canvas

Canvas administrators can add LTI tools at the global level. Depending on institutional settings, instructors can add LTI tools to their own courses. Please refer to your onboarding communication for your CUPA-provided key and secret.

On this page, you'll find instructions for

  1. LTI Integration
  2. Adding Course Content Links to Canvas
  3. Initializing the Course
  4. Using Canvas-Specific Features
  5. Copying Your Canvas Course

1. LTI Integration

Canvas refers to LTI tools as apps. Admins can add apps at the global level, making them available for all instructors in any course (recommended). Depending on institutional settings, instructors may be able to add apps to their own courses.

To add PsycLearn course

  • Log into Canvas.
  • Select Admin from the menu on the left, then select Settings. (If you're adding PsycLearn to a course, navigate to the course first, then select Settings from the menu on the left.)
  • Select the Apps tab, then the View App Configurations button.
  • Add APA PsycLearn by selecting + Add App.
  • Complete the Add App fields as follows
    • Configuration Type - Manual Entry
    • Tool Provider Name - APA PsycLearn/li
    • Consumer Key and Shared Secret - Provided by CUPA
    • Launch URL - https://app.willolabs.com
    • Domain - https://app.willolabs.com
    • Privacy - Public (Please talk to your Onboarding Specialist if your institution requires different privacy settings.)
  • Select Submit.

2. Adding Course Content Links to Canvas

Once the app has been added to Canvas as an LTI tool provider, content needs to be made visible to students. This is completed by adding specific links to your course.

In Canvas, you must add these content links as Assignments to ensure grade passback. (Depending on how your course content is organized, you can then add these assignment links to modules.)

Adding Assignment Links

  • Navigate to your course.
  • Select Assignments from the menu on the left, then +Assignment.
  • Name and describe the assignment for your students.
  • Complete the assignment fields according to your course structure and preferences.
  • Select External Tool as the Submission Type and complete the fields as follows (illustrated below)
    • Paste the URL provided by CUPA (check the spreadsheet from your Onboarding Specialist)
    • Check the box to Load This Tool In A New Tab.
  • Select Save & Publish to add the content to the Assignments section of your course.

3. Initialize the Course

You must initialize your course so that students can access any of the APA Digital Learning content you added. This one-time-only step is required. To initialize your course, select any link that you've added.

  • Enter your course start date (as mm/dd/yyyy). The date you provide will determine when students can begin accessing the PsycLearn content. (If students are using access codes, this date will also be used to determine their free trial period.)/li
  • Select Submit to initialize your course.

4. Using Canvas-Specific Features

When you use Modules, Canvas allows you to add conditions to assignment links to help students gain a better understanding of concepts with adaptive release of content using Mastery Paths and scaffold assignments using requirements and prerequisites.

Mastery Paths

Canvas calls their adaptive release functionality Mastery Paths. Setting up a Mastery Path for an assignment or quiz automatically assigns additional content based on student performance. For example, if you're requiring the How to Avoid Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism quiz, you could add a Mastery Path to assign the related tutorial if the student does not achieve a set grade on the quiz.

To create a Mastery Path

  • Navigate to the Mastery Paths tab when you're adding a new assignment. From an existing assignment, you can select Mastery Paths from the drop-down menu or Edit then More Options to access the same Mastery Paths tab.
  • In the Mastery Paths tab, there are three rows to define the range for student performance and add assignments for each range.
  • Update the score range by selecting the prepopulated score to edit it. (The example below shows the ranges 100-85% and 84-65%.)
  • To define the assignment required based on the student's score, select the plus icon (+) in the score range. Select an existing assignment (or assignments), then Add Items. Note that you cannot create a new assignment link from the Mastery Paths option. (The example below assigns the tutorial to students who score between 65-84%).
  • Select Save when you've finished adding assignments to all of the score ranges.

Requirements and Prerequisites

If you're using modules within your course, consider using requirements and prerequisites to ensure that students are progressing through content as you intend so that they can build on existing learning.

Requirements

A requirement in Canvas can use different criteria for completing an assignment depending on how you want to sequence your assignments.

To add requirements to your module assignments

  • Access the menu (three dots aligned vertically) at the far right of the module title and select Edit.

  • In the Edit Module Settings modal, select whether students must complete all of the assignments (and if they must do so in a set order) or if they can complete any assignment from a defined list.
  • Select +Add Requirement to select an assignment from that module, then select a criterion for the requirement - view the assignment, mark it as complete, submit the assignment or score at least a certain percentage.
  • Use +Add Requirement to place parameters on additional assignments in the module.
  • When you are finished adding requirements, select the Update Module button to save and publish the changes to your course. When you do, a label will appear to the right of the module title letting students know whether they must complete all or one item from the module.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites can help students complete content in an order that fits your curriculum. For example, you can use prerequisites to ensure students complete a PsycLearn orientation lesson before accessing their assignments on those platforms.

Prerequisites are module-based, so you can set one module as a prerequisite for another module. The module designated as the prerequisite before starting another must have at least one assignment set as a requirement. The example below shows the Orientation Module for PsycLearn has one requirement and is also the prerequisite for the Introduction to APA Style module.

To set a prerequisite for a module

  • Access the menu (three dots aligned vertically) at the far right of the module title and select Edit.
  • In the Edit Module Settings modal, select +Add prerequisite.
  • Select a course module from the drop-down list. (While all of your modules are shown in this list, prerequisites only work with modules where at least one assignment has a requirement.)
  • Select the Update Module button to save and publish the prerequisite(s) to your course. When you do, a label will appear to the right of the module title letting students know which module is the prerequisite for access.

5. Copying Your Canvas Course

If you've used APA PsycLearn in previous courses, you may be able to copy your course, modules, and assignments. After you copy your course, we recommend double-checking

  • Assignment link settings (to make sure they're still opening in a new tab) and
  • Assignment due dates.

If you don't see the options shown in these instructions, you may want to check with your LMS admin to confirm that copying course content is available in your instance of Canvas.

If you'd like to review additional content and add new links, please refer to the spreadsheet provided by your onboarding specialist. Please note launch URLs are not clickable until they have been added to your course.

To copy your course

  • Select Settings from the main course page.

  • On the next screen, select Copy this Course from the right-hand navigation.

  • Name your new course and add additional details. Select an option to copy All content or Select specific content, then select Create Course.
